Hello, I’m Julie, and Tiny Studio is my little corner for sharing a love of the wildlife around us.
I live in Clonmel, County Tipperary, where I’ve been since 2016. Most of my paintings begin in the garden, simply watching who comes and goes: the robin on the fence, the blue tits at the feeder. Spending time with them slows everything down, and I try to carry a little of that calm into each illustration.
Every picture is painted by hand in watercolour, sometimes with coloured pencils, then scanned so it can travel onto calendars, greeting cards, prints, stickers and a children’s book. I like soft colours, quiet compositions and plenty of white space, so that each bird or animal has room to be itself.
I’m especially fond of the discreet ones: the small birds you hear before you see, the animals that come out at night, the ones people tend to overlook. For my 2027 calendar, Animals of My Garden, I wanted to look at what each of them quietly does for the place we share, and what might change without them.
My children’s book, The Power of Birds, is available in English and French. It follows Robbie the robin and Foxy the fox, and every “superpower” in it is something real that the bird can do.
I like to keep things simple and close to home. My book, calendars, cards and prints are printed in Ireland, on recycled paper wherever possible, and my wooden keyrings and bookmarks are made by a small family business in the UK. I try to use as little plastic as I can, and I would rather make fewer things, and make them well.
